Backed-up drain emergency: what to do now
A drain that backs up for the second or third time is an emergency when sewage is at a floor drain or tub. Los Gatos Express Plumbing runs 24/7 dispatch, and a plumber can assess the line the same day when schedules allow.
- Stop running water. Do not flush, run the dishwasher or start laundry until the line is clear.
- Keep people and pets off wet flooring. Backed-up sewage carries bacteria, so wear gloves if you must touch anything.
- Find your cleanout, a capped pipe near the house or at the property line, and leave the cap closed unless a plumber asks you to open it.
- Do not pour drain chemicals into a standing backup. Call (855) 575-2890 for dispatch.
Chemical cleaners sit in the pipe and can splash back on a plumber. Skipping them also keeps the camera view clear.
How hydro jetting differs from a cable
A drain cable, also called a snake, is a spinning steel cable that punches a hole through a clog. It clears the path, but grease and scale left on the pipe wall can build the blockage again within weeks.
A jetter sends high-pressure water through a hose with a nozzle that points backward and forward. The water scours the pipe wall and flushes debris downstream. It is the better tool for heavy grease, built-up scale and fine roots, and for lines that keep clogging. A cable is still the right first tool for a simple soft clog.
Cable got stuck or the clog returned in a week? Call and describe what happened, and we will tell you whether jetting fits.
Call (855) 575-2890When the snake got stuck or the clog returned
Most jetting calls begin with a sentence like, I had it snaked and it came back. That pattern is usually a coating problem. The cable opens a channel, and the sludge along the walls slowly closes it again.
Roots do the same thing. A cable cuts the strands inside the pipe, but the root mass at the joint regrows. Jetting can clear root fibers and the grease that holds them, though it does not stop roots from entering a cracked joint. If roots keep returning, the pipe itself needs a look.
A camera comes first, always
A camera matters even more for jetting. A sewer camera shows the pipe material, the clog and any cracks, bellies or offset joints before water pressure goes in.
That order protects you. High-pressure water is the wrong tool for a collapsed or cracked pipe, because it can push through weak spots and wash soil into the line. It can also turn a small crack into a larger one.
If the camera shows damage, we explain it and talk through options, which may include sewer line repair instead of jetting. A separate sewer camera inspection is available when you want the pipe documented on its own.
Cable, jetter or repair?
The cause of the clog decides the tool.
| Problem | Best first tool | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Soft clog, first time | Cable | Quick and gentle, and usually enough |
| Grease coating on kitchen line | Hydro jetting | Water scours the wall, a cable only bores a hole |
| Fine roots at joints | Jetting after camera check | Clears fibers, but joints may still need repair |
| Cracked, bellied or collapsed pipe | Repair, not jetting | Pressure can worsen the damage |
| Repeat backups with no clear cause | Camera, then decide | Shows what the pipe is actually doing |
No plumber should promise jetting until the line has been looked at.
Your side of the sewer lateral in Los Gatos
West Valley Sanitation District serves Los Gatos, and its code makes the upper lateral, from the building to the cleanout at the property line, the owner's responsibility. The lower lateral to the public main belongs to the district. If there is no cleanout, or you cannot find it, the district says the owner is responsible for clearing the line all the way to the main.
That matters for jetting. A cleanout gives access for a hose and a camera, so finding yours saves time. District crews check the main and, where a cleanout exists, clear the lateral beyond it.
Anything on your side needs a plumber, and work on a private upper lateral requires a permit. Ask the District or Town if you are unsure.
A jetting truck needs room to park and a clear hose path to the cleanout, which is worth mentioning if your street is narrow or steep near Highway 17. Jetting calls from Santa Clara County ZIP codes 95030, 95031, 95032 and 95033 are dispatched from the same number.
Grease, wipes and what not to flush
Kitchen grease is a frequent cause of repeat clogs. It cools in the pipe and sticks. West Valley Sanitation District's public message is to flush only toilet paper, pee and poop, and to keep so-called flushable wipes out of the toilet. Wipes do not break down like paper, and they catch on rough pipe.
A practical habit is to pour cooking fat into a jar, let it set, and put it in the trash. Wipe pans with a paper towel before washing. If you run a restaurant, the District requires a grease control device approved by its manager, and a jetting plan should fit that setup. Our drain cleaning page covers the routine side.
What affects the cost of hydro jetting
A clear price is given before work starts. These factors move it.
Access to the line
A clear cleanout is quicker than a line with no access point.
Length and size of pipe
A short branch costs less labor than a long main to the street.
Severity of the buildup
Heavy grease or dense roots take more passes than a light film.
Camera work
Looking at the line before and after adds time but shows the result.
After-hours dispatch
Night and weekend calls are arranged differently from daytime visits.
On insurance, a blockage from wear, grease or roots is often not covered, while sudden damage from a backup sometimes is, depending on the policy and any sewer backup endorsement. Check yours.

After the line is clear, and backflow protection
Ask for a short camera pass at the end so you can see clean pipe. The District's code requires an owner-funded backflow device when the lowest fixture floor sits less than one foot above the nearest upstream manhole. Owners with one should check it every three to six months, because its flap can close during a blockage. Hydro jetting questions from Los Gatos homeowners
Yes. Our dispatch runs 24/7 and same-day appointments are offered when available. We do not promise an arrival time, but we will tell you what to do while a plumber is on the way.
It can if the pipe is cracked or collapsed. That is why a camera look comes first, and why we may recommend repair rather than jetting.
For grease, scale and roots, usually yes. For a simple first clog, a cable is often enough.
It depends on the line. Restaurants and homes with a grease history may need regular visits, while many homes never do. A camera pass can show the build-up rate.
It clears root fibers inside the pipe, but roots can return through a cracked joint. A repair is the lasting fix for that.
Look for a capped pipe near the house or at the property line. Not every home has one, and a plumber can help locate it.
